"In today's climate of endless war and uncontrolled corporate greed, drawing upon the heritage of the 1930s would be a huge step forward" writes Howard Zinn, evoking the memories of FDR's New Deal Reforms in 1930s to lift America out of the great depression, which subsequently helped this nation write a long prosperous story line of the powerful American Century. As did the great Crash of 1929 which brought the cracks in America's superficial prosperity to light, the recent financial meltdown in Wall street and global markets illuminate similar crack which has been showing its ugly face more than often in recent years. Are we in dire need of another wave of sweeping reforms, similar to the creation or empowerment of the 'alphabet soup' agencies to reign in the deregulated financial maverick system?With the world looking towards compassionate or creative capitalism and yearning for moral and ethical overtures in corporate practices; with an oxymoron middle class (emerging in developing economies & shrinking in developed west) hurting as the days go by, with the emphasis shifting progressively from industrial to information to finally energy efficient sustainable technologies, are we finally facing upto the harsh realities of Gandhian economics? The long term sustainability is the new mantra in all business.. but can this be effective with the basics of ever expanding economic consumption in debt (did I hear no payments till 2012 for an 50" plasma TV? or 0% interest rate for a gas guzzling sports utility?). Only time will tell if the Gandhian economics of "Replacing the Economics of Scarcity with an Economics of Abundance" will be one of the billion answers; economists, policy makers and corporate leaders are currently searching for..
